Education

The health and comfort of students

The health and comfort of students and teachers are among the many factors that contribute to learning and productivity in the classroom, which in turn affect performance and achievement.

Comparative risk studies in recent years performed in the United States by the EPA’s Science Advisory Board have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. Good Indoor Air Quality is an important component of a healthy indoor environment and can help schools reach their primary goal of educating children.

Closer to home, a year-long Indoor Air Quality study conducted by RMIT University has found Victorian students are learning in classrooms with very poor air quality. Further, studies in other states have found similar levels of poor air quality in classrooms. Some of the more common side effects from poor air quality in schools include:

  • Performance

    Impacting on student attendance, comfort, and performance

  • School closures

    Increasing potential for school closures due repairs and maintenance;

  • Staff performance

    Reduction of teacher and staff performance

  • Strained relationships

    Strained relationships among school administration, parents and staff

  • Lower concentration

    Students having lower concentration

  • Trust

    Impacting on community trust

  • Negative Publicity

    The acceleration of the deterioration and reduction of the efficiency of the school’s physical plant and equipment; Creating negative publicity;

Failure to prevent or respond promptly to Indoor Air Quality problems can increase long and short-term health effects for students and staff, such as

Coughing

Eye irritation

Headaches

Allergic reactions

asthma

Legionnaire’s disease

Infection Range

A recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that coughs and sneezes can travel 200 times further than previously thought. Most scientists thought that the cloud of infected pollutants in a cough could travel for 60 metres.

100 micrometres 70%
50 micrometres 81%
10 micrometre 94%

However, the new study has found that droplets of 100 micrometres can travel five times further than previously estimated, and that droplets of 10 micrometre can travel 200 times further. Droplets less than 50 micrometres in size can remain airborne long enough to reach ceiling ventilation, compromising air quality that leads to infectious outbreaks.

COVID 19

In today’s world with the advent of COVD-19 as well as the WHO classifying COVID-19 as an airborne virus, this adds another layer of health complexity in an environment where children sit in close proximity of each other for extended periods of time.

Further, when factoring in the difficulty in getting children to adhere to social distancing practices – this has brought solutions that combat the spread of COVID-19 front and centre.

Applying a proactive approach to improving Indoor Air Quality in schools and education facilities will
